Grand Budapest Hotel

Another ridiculously fun movie by Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Royal Tannebaums, Moonrise Kingdom) about Zero (played as an older man by F Murray Abraham), who tells the story of how he went from being an underage lobby boy for M Gustave (played by Ralph Fiennes) to owner of the Grand Budapest. While it is told by Zero, the movie is mostly about the antics of M Gustave who was the head concierge and became at one point the owner as well. As I was going out of the theater, I overheard one woman say, “It is just like a cartoon except it has real people”. Perfect description! It plays like a zany cartoon that is colorful to watch, is fast paced, and full of fun, madcap energy. I found myself reminded of the original Three Stooges and Monty Python Flying Circus shows. Big thumbs up for a very funny and smart movie that was just the dose of fun I needed (and a shout to Tilda Swinton who I did not immediately recognize but was probably the most visually unforgettable character)! (2014; 5 Stars)
