Finding Vivian Maier

rather fascinating documentary about a photographer who was completely unknown as a photographer while she was alive. The guy who directs the movie won a box of negatives at an auction. He started going through them and saw how good they were; that was the beginning of his journey to discover who Vivian Maier was and to figure out how to get her photography more widely seen. The movie was great for a lot of reasons: (1) it is a wonderful detective journalism story; (2) Vivian Maier’s photography really is quite powerful; (3) as a psychologist, I was fascinated by the complexity of Maier’s personality told by the stories of people who knew her and through some of her photographic fascinations –the move leaves more questions unanswered than answered, which is just fine; and (4) it is a commentary on the “rules” certain people create that govern what is and is not art. Thumbs up for a movie that does a wonderful job of telling the story of a “reluctant” artist and showing the viewer so many pieces of her best work (it is just amazing that she accumulated over 150,000 negatives!)(2014; 4 Stars)
