The Double

Jesse Eisenberg plays Simon James, a meek and unassertive office worker who has been working in the same monotonous job for 7 years; no one seems to notice him, and his boss in one scene treats him like a new employee. He has a secret crush on Hannah (played by Mia Wasikowska) and cannot seem to take the next step. One day James Simon (also played by Eisenberg) comes to the office; James looks exactly like him, and everyone around James takes to his more gregarious and unabashed personality. The movie is a visual and auditory surrealistic pleasure. It is very hard to describe, but it reminded me of a dream sequence in a David Lynch movie with a lot more humor. There are other clear influences, including the early silent Metropolis (dark with suffering mechanical nature of work) and the surrealism from the movie Brazil. Big thumbs up for a movie that is incredibly creative, very funny, has fun music, and showcases a truly wonderful performance from Jesse Eisenberg. I will probably try to see this again on the big screen. (2014; 4.5 Stars)
