Jon Favreau plays Carl, a chef who loves food and creating new and inspired dishes and works for a jerk of a boss, Riva (played by Dustin Hoffman). Carl has a young son and has been recently divorced from Inez (played by Sofia Vergara). Carl gets tired of dealing with his boss and having his creativity constrained, quits, and reluctantly agrees to operate a food truck. The movie was actually pretty wonderful. The cast was really great (Scarlett Johansson, Bob Cannavale, and Robert Downey Junior all make appearances); the story was nice – a lot of it has to do with the relationship between Carl and his son which has been strained since the divorce; and the movie just felt like fun all the way through. There are a lot of nods to technology (tweeting is involved in a very funny way) and to the generation gap and to our kids who are a heck of a lot more adept with technology than we are. Big thumbs up for a very charming movie and one that should have very wide appeal; it does not add much to the genre of food centered movies, but in my experience, you cannot go wrong with a movie that has food as one of its central themes. (2014; 4 Stars)
