Awake: The Life of Yogananda

A biography of the life of Paramahansa Yogananda, the first yogi to come from India to America, stay in America, and bring the science of meditation and yoga to the West. The Autobiography of a Yogi is one of those books in my top 10 that completely changed the direction of my life, and I have been involved with the church he started – the Self Realization Fellowship – for many years. I really enjoyed the movie, particularly the numerous still and video clips of him from his speeches during his early travels in America; the directors also did a nice job of showing the connections between his coming to American at about the same time as the fundamental nature of reality was being changed by people like Einstein. I know quite a bit about him, so the movie itself felt a bit “light” to me (although all accurate). However, and for those not familiar with the Autobiography of a Yogi or his life, it is a really nice introduction to him and what he did. Thumbs up from me for a nice depiction of a very moving and inspirational story. (2014; 3 Stars)
