Hail Caesar!

This should have been a really good movie. It is written and directed by the Coen Bothers, and the majority of their films are smart and funny. This movie is supposed to be a satire on the Hollywood film industry in the 1950’s during the McCarthy era and when Hollywood studio heads owned their lead actors and actresses. It has a phenomenal cast – George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, and many others. While there were a couple of scenes that made me laugh, overall, it wasn’t funny, and I don’t think the film got its point across in a satirical way; I thought it was stitched together rather poorly. I am not an expert in this era of Hollywood, but I know a fair amount about it; from what I do know, the representation of the era had the right content (and the sets felt very accurate) but the wrong delivery. My Aunt Jeannette went to see it with me, and her reaction was that it was a STINKER in capital letters. So, thumbs down from here; I had rather high expectations based on a trailer that makes the film look very funny. I did learn that, if Channing Tatum was singing in his role, he can sing a bit, but the scene he was in just made me later scratch my head and ask, Why? This won’t be one of the Coen Brother’s memorable films. (2016; 2 stars)
