Life, Animated

Documentary based on the life of Owen Suskind, who suddenly stopped speaking when he was three years old and who was diagnosed as autistic. The family discovered, quite by accident several years later, that they could communicate with him through animated Disney films.  Owen used the scenes from various movies to signal what he was going through. The film is wonderful as it chronicles both his life as an emerging adult transitioning to independent living and stories and flashbacks of how the family learned and continue to learn how to deal with Owen’s autism. The film should appeal to Disney lovers, as there are a lot of clips from the old movies, and there is some wonderful animation of a story Owen wrote that is about all of the sidekick characters in the movies. Thumbs up for a very endearing, emotional, and inspiring story.
