Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley reprise their roles as Edina and Patsy who have champagne tastes on beer budgets (or no budgets) and are unemployed while doing a fantastic job of looking employed. The movie picks up where the show left off; this time, the two go to a party during which Edina bumps into Kate Moss and knocks her into the Thames River. Eddie and Patsy go on the lam and get into several adventures. I am a huge fan of the shows, which are very funny. However, while I laughed in several places, I realized that 90 minutes of Edina and Patsy was a bit too much. The humor got rather old, and I just didn’t laugh like I do when I watch the shows. It would have been nice to see Saunders take the schtick in a different direction and get more mileage from the humor. I give this a bare thumbs up, mostly because I just like the two of them so much. I watched this on the airplane, and I didn’t find this to be the mindless humor I was looking for. It is clearly a challenge to turn what is a series of hilarious 30 minute shows into a full-fledged film.
