Four high school friends – Spencer, Fridge, Bethany, and Martha – all end up, for different reasons, in detention together. Their task is to clean up a space that will ultimately become the new computer lab for the school. They stumble onto an old Playstation-like device; once it is plugged in, they are transported into the game Jumanji. Spencer, the nerd, becomes the character played by Dwayne Johnson. Fridge, who is a football player, inhabits the body of Kevin Hart; self-absorbed and selfie-obsessed Bethany inhabits the body of Jack Black, and Martha inhabits the body of Karen Gillan. The best thing the movie has going for it is that it is very funny, especially Jack Black playing Bethany. And it would not be a good movie about inhabiting the bodies of others if they characters didn’t learn things about themselves along the way (which they do, at least to a certain extent). Not a perfect movie, but it gets a thumbs-up from me; it is “lite” but very entertaining and a diversion for several good laughs for a couple of hours. My daughter had seen it twice already, so it came well reviewed to me. And of course, she took the opportunity to see it yet again.
