Ready Player One

Tye Sheridan is Wade Watts, a teenager who lives in a place called the Stacks in Ohio in the year 2045. The majority of people play in Oasis, a virtual reality world that operates a lot like an Xbox or other video game. Whenever life gets you down, you can don the virtual reality glasses and pass the hours as an avatar of your own creation (Wade’s avatar is Parzival). The creator of Oasis (played by Mark Rylance) dies and leaves a challenge for players: Gather 3 keys to unlock the ultimate prize and inherit the wealth of Oasis. What …

Love, Simon

I will start out by stating my biases – I have seen a LOT of these kinds of coming out, coming of age movies. Because I have seen so many, these days I look for the films that stand out from the rest or add some unique twist to the usual storyline. This film, shot in real time, follows Cleo, a self-absorbed pop singer who is evaluating her life due to a recent test for cancer. During this evening, she is due to get her results. The film is told in 5-6 minute “Chapters”, starting at 5:00 PM, and during each, she interacts with friends, musicians, taxi drivers, and others, all the …

Game Night

This film is about a game night gone wrong. Max (Jason Bateman) and his wife Annie (Rachel McAdams) start a tradition of Game Night during which couples get together to compete in a variety of living room games. Regulars include Ryan, who brings a different woman each night; Kevin and Michelle, who squabble over a secret held by Michelle; and Gary, the left-out neighbor. One night, Max’s brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler), in town for a visit, adds a twist by telling everyone that he has added a twist to Game Night in that events will happen that they won’t know …
