Judy

At the age of 46, and one year before she died, Judy Garland \agrees to do a concert tour in London as a way to raise money to provide a stable home for her children, Lorna and Joey. The film uses the concert tour and flashbacks to tell the story of her last big tour. Renee Zellweger does a fabulous job of capturing the mannerisms of Garland. I am not quite old enough to know Garland well, beyond my memories of seeing her on television and hearing her songs. But Zellweger captures Judy Garland’s essence and mannerisms incredibly well, and she sings Judy’s songs with emotional intensity and flair. As a movie, I thought it was good, but not great. I knew enough about her life as a child actress owned by MGM studios that I found the flashbacks to not add much to the story, and one of the subplots, which I suspect was invented, did not work so well for me. But when Zellweger is on stage singing, the movie shines and is very satisfying. Thumbs up for a film provides an excellent showcase for Renee Zellweger’s talents as an actress and singer. I am sure she will be an Oscar contender this year for her performance. (2019; 3.5 Stars)
