This film is based on the story of how Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) filed a lawsuit against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) for sexual harassment. Her cause was bolstered by Fox News host Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron). I will start with what I thought was good. The makeup – incredible. These three actors look so much like the people they are playing. Charlize Theron’s impersonation of Megyn Kelly is uncanny. The acting is excellent by all. I particularly liked Charlize Theron who just always looked and seemed like Megyn (I don’t think there is any role she cannot disappear into). Margot Robbie, who plays Kayla, a character created from a composite of several others who came forward, is outstanding in her supporting role. She has the best and most powerful scene in the entire film; when you see it, you realized why she was nominated for her supporting role). As an entire film, it is mediocre. There is almost no depth to the real problem of sexual harassment and its toll that the film is trying to bring to light. It always feels more sensational than insightful. I really felt that this film would have had more impact as a documentary or as a dramatic piece that really explored the depths of the issues. I give a thumbs up but really for the superior acting and makeup and not much else about the film. I kind of felt like I did when I saw Vice. I had no interest in seeing a film about Dick Cheney but I am glad I did because the acting and makeup were terrific. I had no interest in seeing a film about Roger Ailes, but it was worth the time.
