Swallow

Haley Bennet is Hunter, wife of Ritchie, the son of very wealthy parents and in line to manage the family business. On the surface, Hunter appears to have everything going for her – a very successful husband, money, and a new home.  However, as she feels more diminished by Ritchie’s success and treated as an object by her in-laws, Hunter develops pica, an uncontrollable urge to swallow objects. The progression of her condition and understanding why forms the core of the story. Haley Bennett is superb; she manages through facial expressions to convey the reality of a woman whose world is falling apart. Elizabeth Marvel, who plays the mother-in-law, is horribly creepy. I also really liked the cinematography; great care was taken with many of the shots and coloring to create a suffocating mood. The film wasn’t always easy to watch but was nonetheless compelling. Thumbs up from me for a film that gets at the etiology of pica in a way that hasn’t been done before and that showcases a brilliant and sensitive performance by the star. (2020; 4 Stars)
