Kay (Emily Mortimer) and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcoat) return to Kay’s family home when her mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) has been missing for an extended time. The find a house of a woman who is suffering from Alzheimer’s with the Post-it note labels. Edna suddenly returns home, and several mysterious incidents take place, and it seems that there is some other presence in the house with them. I really liked this film. The director creates an old-school spooky horror film with a twist: She has woven into the story a narrative about what it is like to lose someone you love to dementia and to have the person you love and remember slowly disappear. How the director weaves this into the plot of the horror story is really quite clever. The score and the camera work create a psychological, suspenseful horror story that, similar to Hereditary, is about family dynamics. It is a film that benefits from not overthinking anything but just moving with the flow of the story as the family deals with what is happening to Edna. Thumbs up for me for a smart and creative (and sometimes poignant) entry into the horror genre. I really loved the ending. (2020; 4 Stars)
