Weathering With You

This film is a follow-up to the wonderful Makoto Shinkai 2016 film Your Name. Hodaka is a 16-year-old boy who runs away from his home on one of the islands to the city of Tokyo. Tokyo is experiencing record intense and long-lasting rains. There, struggling to find his way as a minor in a big city, he meets Hina, a girl who has the ability to bring sunshine for short periods of time. When she realizes this, the two of them start a business to ensure that special events have sun. I love this film. The animation is very colorful, and the music, which is mostly very upbeat, is perfectly matched to the mood of key moments in the film. The use of weather as a metaphor for life and relationships is quite excellent, and it is fun to journey with these two as they find love in an adult world that seems to constantly get in the way of it. I also like the way it weaves folklore into a modern romance. Big thumbs up from me for a film that is magical and definitely makes you smile watching it. It looks like there might be a dubbed English version, which I did not see, but wished I had, because the subtitles kept getting in the way of the translated content from what the characters were reading, making the screen very “busy”. But if you want to watch a film that leaves you feeling really good during at the end, this is one to put on your list. (2019; 4.5 Stars)
