Don’t Look Up

Adam McKay’s latest film is a story of science and politics. Dr. Mindy (Leonard DiCaprio) is a scientist, and his doctoral student Kate Diabiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discovers, nearly by accident, that there is a comet heading toward Earth and threatens to send the planet into extinction. Dr. Mindy and Kate are invited to speak with the President (Meryl Streep) and her son and Chief of Staff (Johah Hill). The question is, will science win the day? This is an Adam McVay film, so we know the answer, but he has a lot of fun getting us there.  It is amazing to me how critics have generally panned the film (the audience ratings are much better). It is worth seeing. The movie is fun, and in places very funny. It is a satire on the general anti-science stance of the previous administration in general and as it relates to the pandemic in particular that has a lot of truth in it. Even when you can see the evidence in science, when you start to see the Comet Diabiasky with your own eyes, there are forces that are there to try to gaslight the public into believing they are seeing something totally different. The A-list of actors here is long – like the French Dispatch, it seems they were lining up to play in a McKay film. Heck, I want to be in a McKay film. Even Ariana Grande was there. Of course, it wouldn’t be 2021 if Timothee Chalamet was missing; I loved the scenes with him and Jennifer Lawrence. Is it among the best movies of the year? No, but the acting was good, it is very funny, and the satire is penetrating. I loved the final few scenes and thought they were powerful. The post-credit scene is silly. It is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. (2021; 3.5 Stars)
