The Green Knight:

Dev Patel plays Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur. To prove himself as a capable knight, he accepts a challenge from the Green Knight by cutting off the Green Knight’s head, with the stipulation that he return the following year for the same treatment at the hand of the Green Knight. For a year, he passes the time, seemingly without a care, and then at the end of the year, he sets off on the journey to meet his fate. I will say first that I am not familiar with this literature, but I have read that the movie is based on a story of the same name. So, with no knowledge of a prereading, I dove into the movie. It turns out, I loved it. It works as a wonderful fable of life’s journeys and what it means to meet one’s death. Dev Patel seemed perfect for the role, with his mix of naivete, knightly handsomeness, and idealism. It is also beautiful to look at (well, the cinematography, and Dev Patel), and the score is outstanding. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, but I found it very engaging. Big thumbs up from me. (2021; 4.5 Stars).
